Work to live, or live to work?

Midlife is the perfect time to rediscover your passions,
pivot and reinvent yourself.

Midlife is often characterised by a desire for change, many of us feeling fed up with the status quo. I see midlife as chance to reconnect with who you are, reboot your career, and enhance your work life balance to create a life you love.

We’re all going to be working longer, possibly into our 70s and beyond so it’s important we’re doing something fulfilling and that fits with who we are now.

At 40 and 50, we’ve got years of valuable experience and a sense of self-assurance that comes with maturity, but for many of us it’s also a time when what once inspired us at work just doesn’t do it for us anymore.

Maybe it’s because you’re juggling work with family responsibilities or experiencing the ups and downs of the menopause. Or maybe, like a lot of midlifers, you’re facing redundancy at what can feel like the worst age to have to start again. Or maybe it’s because you have the nagging feeling that time’s running out to do ‘that thing’ you always wanted to do.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re already feeling ready for some kind of change in your life. Whether it’s working to live, or living to work, our working life can fluid and fulfilling. You don’t have to settle for safe, now’s the time to make a fresh start, find clarity and feel aligned with what really matters to you, whether it’s:

  • Starting your own business or side hustle
  • Taking a sabbatical to learn, travel or write a book

  • Working less and improving your work-life balance
  • Stepping up for a promotion
  • Taking a career break for caring responsibilities or to get some much-needed headspace

  • Making plans post redundancy
  • Pivoting or changing your profession
  • Becoming a consultant or freelancer
  • Planning for retirement

I’m Bridget, an accredited coach and ICF certified Emotions Coaching Practitioner with over twenty years’ experience. I work with people in their 40s and 50s to empower them to create a more worthwhile working life. I have worked with many clients who have done all the above and are now happily pursuing their next chapter.

I too have experienced a fluid career path. After working at the BBC and Channel 4, I left to start up my own business and later became freelancer. A few years later, I returned to the corporate world then at the age of 30 I decided to ditch my media job to work and travel in Australia. It was here I decided to up-skill and train as a coach. Since my return, I have been coaching, parenting and in the last ten years, co-founded a small digital agency which I continue to manage. I’m now planning what’s next for my 50s and 60s – and beyond!

I have worked with both men and women to help them to move forward with their lives positively.

Here’s a taste from my clients about how coaching helped them.

“I would not hesitate to recommend Bridget to anyone looking to reassess where they are with their work and wondering how to better balance the competing demands of a career, having a family and being happy.

Bridget and I managed to cover a huge amount of ground in four sessions and many of her excellent suggestions have lead to helpful changes in my life. Thank you, I am sure I will be in touch asking to work together again.”

“Bridget has helped me to focus on what I want to get out of my career going forward and what’s holding me back. Her absolute professionalism and calm, intuitive manner are just the balm that is needed when you are unpicking complicated ways of thinking and tackling problems that have been hard to address in the past.

I highly recommend her if you are at a point in your life where you are trying to make sense of where you are, and where you should be heading next. From practical suggestions to in-depth discussions, Bridget will help you gain clarity, purpose and a spring in your step.”

“Bridget’s approach is incredibly effective. I was able to realise my dreams and ambitions for my career and business, as well as sort out areas of my personal life that I was forever ignoring and putting off. I achieved in 12 sessions what I rather fear would have taken 10 years, had I not had coaching.

As a result I feel in control of my life, organised and ready to take on the world.”

“Spending time with Bridget helped me to look again at my priorities. She helped me realise that by changing the way I approach things at work and at home I could achieve more and have greater impact.

Coaching helped me realise I could do things that had previously seemed impossible – including completing a master’s level qualification. Colleagues have noticed a difference, saying that I am focused and effective at work. It was really important for me to have Bridget’s support as I had just returned to part time work from extended maternity leave and I wanted to get the right balance for me between my family and work.”

“Bridget coached me for three months and during that time I made more progress with my career, finances than I have for the last three years. She is focused, intuitive and practical. If you are feeling stuck in a rut, have a dream but are too scared to go for it or simply just want a few pointers to sort yourself out, I would definitely recommend coaching.”

“I have found coaching to be a hugely beneficial experience. It has helped me to work at those areas of my life with which I was becoming increasingly dissatisfied, and has encouraged me to invest time and energy in the things which interest me most.

I found Bridget to be perceptive, encouraging, practical and helpful. I feel that my life is now on track and that I am also now in control in those areas which I found hardest to address.”
